Acoustic Guitar Cost

How much does an acoustic guitar cost?

The guitar is very much the instrument of choice and for anyone looking to learn the recommended route is to buy an acoustic guitar. With a choice of steel stringed or nylon stringed versions and a great number of makes and models to choose from there is much variation in price.

General Cost

• With such variety in the market there is great difficulty in arriving at a general cost as acoustic guitars can cost anything from $50 – for a very basic half size model – to several thousand dollars for a top of the range craftsman made model.
• A classical guitar is the choice for some and features nylon strings and a flat backed body, and costs anything between $100 for a basic model to $5000 for a top of the range version. On average, a good beginner’s model that will last a long time will cost between $300 and $400.
• If you want a steel string acoustic you will pay between $100 and $500 for a basic model that would be decent for beginners. However, it may be wise to pay more – between $700 and $1000 – for a quality model that the learner will not quickly grow out of.
• The electro-acoustic is a model that can be played acoustically or through an amplifier, and can cost anywhere from $200 to many thousands of dollars, while the twelve string acoustic is a more complex model that will cost around the same and is not recommended for beginners.

Extra Cost

• The main extra costs will come in the form of tuition; if you decide to try and teach yourself there are books for as little as $5 and DVD’s for little more.
• Lessons with a professional will vary in cost, but in general should be no more than $20 per hourly session.
• You will also need a case – a protective hard case will cost around $100 and is worth the investment.
• Spare strings cost a few dollars, a tuner little more, and plectrums less than a dollar each.

• Don’t be swayed by brand names when beginning – leave the expensive names until you have learned.
• Insure your instrument – a guitar is a treasured item and deserves to be protected.

• Try before you buy – you will find you like the feel of a certain model and it will come to you naturally.
• Consider second hand – there can be a great deal to be had in quality models.
• Look for discounts online and in stores for cash.
